The short answer

There is no single best scanner app for every person. All good iPhone scanners now find the page edges, crop the page and save a PDF. The differences are in four places: where your files go, what you must pay for, how you organize many documents, and what you can do with a scan after you take it.

  • A few scans a month: use the Notes app or the Files app. They are free and already on your iPhone.
  • Private papers that must stay on the device: Scanner App. It has a password-locked Safe folder and no cloud of its own.
  • You work in Adobe Acrobat: Adobe Scan. Scans go to Adobe cloud storage and open in Acrobat.
  • The most features without a subscription: Genius Scan. Its free plan has no ads.
Note

We make Scanner App. We tell you this so you can judge the comparison. We describe the other apps from their own help pages and current reports, and we only list functions we could confirm.

How we compared

We looked at the things that matter after the first week of use, not only at the first scan:

  • Scan quality: edge detection, crop, and a clean result on plain paper.
  • Price model: what is free, and what needs a subscription.
  • Storage: do files stay on the iPhone, or does the app upload them?
  • Text recognition (OCR): can you copy the text from a scan?
  • Organization and privacy: folders, search, and a way to lock private files.
  • Export: PDF, JPG, and file size control.

The apps, one by one

Apple Notes and Files (built in)

Your iPhone already has a document scanner. In Notes, tap the camera button and choose Scan Documents. In Files, open the More menu and choose Scan Documents. Both find the edges, take the shot by themselves, and let you add more pages. Files saves the scan as a PDF in the folder you choose. Notes keeps the scan in a note, and you can share it as a PDF.

Notes can lock a note with your iPhone passcode or a separate password. With iCloud turned on, notes sync to your other Apple devices. The limits: there are no export size options, and Notes is not a document manager. After 100 scans, a list of notes becomes hard to search.

Scanner App

Scanner App is our app. It scans with automatic edge detection and crop, and builds multi-page PDFs where you can add and reorder pages. OCR finds the text on a page, and Copy All puts it on the clipboard. You can sign a document with an e-signature in the color and line thickness you choose.

Documents go into folders, and you can search them. A password-locked Safe folder keeps private papers apart. You share as PDF or JPG in Original, Medium or Small quality, which helps when an email or upload form has a size limit. You can also import PDFs and print. All files stay on your iPhone. Scanner App has no cloud sync, so make your own backup if you need one.

Scanner App is a free download. Pro features start with a 3-day free trial. It needs iOS 13 or later.

Adobe Scan

Adobe Scan is a free app from Adobe. It scans to PDF and recognizes the text in the scan. You sign in with an Adobe account, and the app stores scans in Adobe cloud storage, where Acrobat can open them. This is good if you already use Acrobat. It is less good if you do not want documents to leave the phone. A Premium subscription adds functions such as export to other file formats, PDF compression, edits after you save, and a password on a PDF.

Genius Scan

Genius Scan, from The Grizzly Labs, has a free plan that its makers call fully functional. It has no ads. The free plan covers capture, editing and manual export. The Ultra subscription adds OCR and searchable PDFs, Genius Cloud sync, a passcode lock, and automatic export to services such as Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive.

Scanner Pro

Scanner Pro is from Readdle, the maker of PDF Expert. It is a free download with a Premium subscription. Premium adds text recognition, export to Word or PowerPoint, password protection for documents, and custom workflows that send scans to a set place. It is a good fit if you already use other Readdle apps.

CamScanner

CamScanner is one of the oldest scanner apps and has a long feature list. The free version shows ads. Users often report a "Scanned by CamScanner" mark on free exports, and a Premium subscription removes it. Many functions, such as most OCR use, need Premium. Read the export preview before you send a file to a client or an office.

Microsoft Lens (retired)

Microsoft Lens was a popular free scanner. Microsoft retired it in 2025. Microsoft removed it from the App Store, and the app stopped making new scans in December 2025. Microsoft now points users to the scanner in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. Do not plan a workflow around Lens in 2026.

Which app for which job

Receipts and bills

You scan often, and you send files to an accountant or an expense form. Folders and fast export help most. Scanner App and Genius Scan both work well here. In Scanner App, the Small export setting keeps a long PDF under an email limit.

IDs, contracts and medical papers

Keep these files on the device and behind a lock. Scanner App keeps scans on the iPhone and has a password-locked Safe folder. A locked note in Apple Notes also works for a few pages.

School and office work in Acrobat

If your team shares files through Adobe, Adobe Scan saves a step. The scan is already in your Adobe cloud storage when you open Acrobat on a computer.

One form, once a year

Use the Files app. Open the folder, choose Scan Documents, and save the PDF. You do not need to install anything. Our guide on how to scan documents to PDF for free shows each step.

Tip

Scan quality depends more on light and contrast than on the app. Put a white page on a dark table, use daylight, and hold the iPhone parallel to the page. Read more in how to scan documents on iPhone.

FAQ

Is the iPhone's built-in scanner good enough?

For a few pages a month, yes. The Notes app and the Files app find the page edges and save a PDF at no cost. A dedicated app helps when you scan often and need folders, signatures, export sizes or a locked folder for private papers.

What happened to Microsoft Lens?

Microsoft retired Microsoft Lens in 2025. It removed the app from the App Store and stopped new scans in December 2025. Microsoft now points users to the scanner in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.

Which scanner apps add a watermark?

CamScanner is the app that people most often report for a "Scanned by CamScanner" mark on free exports. The terms change by region and version, so check the export preview before you send a file.

Do scanner apps upload my documents?

It depends on the app. Adobe Scan stores scans in Adobe cloud storage. Notes can sync through iCloud if you turn it on. Scanner App keeps the files on your iPhone and does not have its own cloud.

How much does Scanner App cost?

Scanner App is a free download. Scanner App Pro starts with a 3-day free trial. You can cancel the trial in your App Store subscription settings before it ends.
